Are You Sure Your Website Needs AI?

When AI comes up in a business conversation today, it is easy to jump straight to the idea that a website needs some kind of AI assistant.

As if that will solve everything.

We once had a potential client walk away because we would not guarantee that the website assistant we built would bring more traffic and sales to their site.

We could not promise that, because that is not what a website assistant is designed to do on its own. We explained this from the beginning, but the business owner preferred what they had been hearing on social media: that AI can solve almost anything quickly and cheaply.

What we could see, however, was that the more fundamental problem was the website itself. With or without an assistant, the site was unlikely to deliver what they expected from it.

Because a website assistant is not always the first — or the best — step.

Sometimes visitors cannot find what they need because the website itself is unclear. It may not be obvious what the business actually offers, the next step may be difficult to find, or there may simply be too much information to work through.

In that situation, an AI-powered website assistant might still be useful. But it may make more sense to improve the website first.

Because an assistant should not be used to hide the problems of a website that is not working properly.

First, we need to understand what is happening on the website

A business owner naturally sees their own website very differently from a new visitor.

They already know where the services are, what the terminology means, which button to click and where each piece of information can be found.

A visitor, on the other hand, may have only a few seconds to decide:

Am I in the right place?

Can this business help me with my problem?

Where do I find what I need?

What should I do next?

If those answers are not clear quickly, it is very easy for them to leave.

And sometimes the solution is not more technology.

It may simply be clearer copy, a better structure, more obvious calls to action or an easier journey from initial interest to getting in touch.

When does a website assistant make sense?

For example, when visitors regularly ask the same questions.

When choosing between several services or products is difficult.

When someone needs a little help working out what their next step should be.

Or when a potential customer has a question at a time when nobody is available to answer it.

In those situations, a website assistant is more than just another feature on the site.

It can become a digital team member that communicates with visitors, helps them find their way around and supports them in taking the next step.

A well-designed website assistant, much like a good receptionist, can guide someone from their first question through to making contact — or even completing a purchase.

But only if it genuinely has a job to do.

That is why we introduced our website audit service

This is exactly why we introduced website audits at NLS.

We do not begin with the assumption that every business needs a new website or an AI-powered website assistant.

We start by looking at how the current website actually works.

Is it immediately clear what the business does?

Can visitors find the important information easily?

Is the next step obvious?

Where might somebody get stuck?

Are there points where potential enquiries may be lost unnecessarily?

And we also look at whether a website assistant would genuinely add value.

The answer is not automatically, “You need AI.”

Sometimes a few smaller improvements are enough.

Sometimes the website already works well and an assistant could make the customer experience even better.

And sometimes the website itself needs to be reconsidered first.

What if the website itself is the problem?

That led us naturally to another new NLS service.

We now design and build websites too.

For us, this is really a continuation of the same way of thinking.

A website is not simply a collection of pages, images and text.

It is often one of the first places where a potential customer meets your business.

In many ways, it is like someone walking through your front door.

They need to understand where they have arrived.

They need to be able to find what they came for.

And it should be easy for them to take the next step.

If an AI-powered website assistant is also part of the system, ideally the website and the assistant should not be treated as two separate things.

They should work together.

The visitor arrives.

They understand the offer.

They look around.

They ask a question if they need to.

They get help.

And then they can move forward.

The question is not: where can we add AI?

At NLS, we still do not believe that every business automatically needs AI.

A much more useful question is:

What is currently making it difficult for visitors to move forward?

Sometimes the answer is a better website.

Sometimes it is a well-designed website assistant.

Sometimes it is both.

And sometimes the existing setup is already doing a good job and only needs a few small changes.

That is what a website audit is really about for us.

First, we look at what is already there. Then we decide what is genuinely needed.

Only after that do we start designing the solution.
